Jessy Lanza

"Baby, keep it simple," goes the hook on the track where most of us heard Jessy Lanza for the first time, Ikonika's "Beach Mode." It's a sentiment that electronic music producers of all stripes have taken to heart lately, with reams of lo-fi analogue beats being produced on rudimentary setups. But Lanza's simplicity is a different kind. On her debut album, Pull My Hair Back, which was produced alongside Jeremy Greenspan of Junior Boys and is set for release on Hyperdub, there's not a wasted moment or a superfluous touch. Her songs bristle with an Italo chill but pulse with a warm hardware heartbeat. It's all held together by her voice, a powerful presence that pushes her songs along with soft whispers and boisterous belting alike. --Resident Advisor
